Description
Overview of the medicine
Protide 50 mcg Inhalation Capsule contains Budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid used to prevent and control asthma symptoms and manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by reducing inflammation in the airways, making breathing easier. It is not intended for the relief of acute bronchospasm.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Asthma: 50-200 mcg twice daily. COPD: 100-200 mcg twice daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but close monitoring is recommended.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required.
How to Take
Protide inhalation capsules are for oral inhalation only and should be used with a dry powder inhaler device, not swallowed. Insert the capsule into the device, pierce it, and inhale the powder deeply. Rinse mouth with water after use to prevent oral thrush.
Mechanism of Action
Budesonide is a potent glucocorticoid with a high topical anti-inflammatory activity. It binds to glucocorticoid receptors, inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and suppressing the immune response in the airways. This leads to a reduction in airway inflammation, bronchial hyperreactivity, and mucus production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 24 hours, but maximum benefit may take 1-2 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine and feces as inactive metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 2-3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after inhalation; systemic bioavailability is low due to extensive first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized by CYP3A4 in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Budesonide or any component of the formulation.
- Acute bronchospasm (not for rescue use).
Drug Interactions
Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Ritonavir
These potent CYP3A4 inhibitors can significantly increase systemic exposure to Budesonide, leading to potential corticosteroid side effects. Concomitant use should be avoided or closely monitored.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely to cause severe problems. Chronic high doses may lead to signs and symptoms of hypercorticism. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; reduction of dose or discontinuation may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Budesonide is considered a preferred inhaled corticosteroid during pregnancy due to extensive data. Consult your doctor. It is excreted in human milk, but at therapeutic doses, effects on the breastfed infant are unlikely. Consult your doctor.
