Description
Overview of the medicine
Raciprox 500 mg Tablet is an antibiotic medicine that is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It's used to treat infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin, bones, joints, and certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg to 750 mg twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. For most moderate infections, 500 mg twice daily is common.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on renal function. Generally, the same as adults, but with caution.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment is required. For creatinine clearance 30-60 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 12 hours. For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 18-24 hours.
How to Take
Take Raciprox 500 mg Tablet orally with or without food. Do not take it with dairy products (like milk or yogurt) or calcium-fortified juices alone, as these can reduce absorption. Take it at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, iron or zinc supplements.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin, the active ingredient in Raciprox, works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 0.5 to 2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (40-50%) and to a lesser extent in the feces (15-20%).
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration; bioavailability is approximately 70-80%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism (10-20%) to several less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- Concurrent use with tizanidine.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring INR monitoring.
Tizanidine
Concurrent use is contraindicated due to increased tizanidine plasma concentrations, leading to hypotension and somnolence.
Theophylline
Ciprofloxacin can increase plasma concentrations of theophylline, leading to increased risk of toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use may increase the risk of tendon disorders, especially in elderly patients.
Antacids, Iron, Zinc, Sucralfate
May significantly reduce the absorption of ciprofloxacin. Administer ciprofloxacin 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, tremors, and possibly seizures. Management involves emptying the stomach by induced vomiting or gastric lavage, monitoring and supportive care. Ensure adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Ciprofloxacin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in human milk; therefore, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
