Description
Overview of the medicine
Radivit-C is a vitamin C supplement essential for immune function, collagen formation, and as an antioxidant. It helps in the growth and repair of tissues, wound healing, and absorption of iron.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once or twice daily, or as directed by a physician. For deficiency, higher doses may be used initially.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, no specific dosage adjustment is typically required.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to the risk of oxalate stone formation with very high doses. Normal doses are generally safe.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. For chewable tablets, chew thoroughly before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Vitamin C acts as a cofactor in several enzymatic reactions, including those involved in collagen synthesis and neurotransmitter synthesis. It is a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage by free radicals. It also plays a crucial role in immune cell function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged or as metabolites in the urine. Excess amounts are rapidly excreted.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 days, depending on body stores and dose.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine, by an active transport mechanism. Absorption is dose-dependent.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites (e.g., oxalate).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients with hyperoxaluria or a history of oxalate kidney stones (especially with high doses).
- •Hemochromatosis (iron overload)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin C may potentially interfere with the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR.
Deferoxamine
Increased iron toxicity when co-administered with high doses of Vitamin C in patients with iron overload.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce plasma levels of Vitamin C, but typically not clinically significant.
Antacids containing Aluminum
May increase aluminum absorption. Avoid concurrent use in patients with renal impairment.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps) and potentially increased risk of kidney stone formation with very high, chronic doses. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when taken at recommended daily allowances. For higher therapeutic doses, consult a physician.
