Description
Overview of the medicine
Ramicol 250 mg Capsule is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg capsule orally every 12 hours for 7-14 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based on age alone, but renal function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min). Consult physician.
How to Take
Take the capsule with a full glass of water, preferably on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals). Avoid taking with milk or dairy products as they can interfere with absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Ramicyclin, the active ingredient, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosomal acceptor site. This action interferes with bacterial growth and multiplication.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects usually seen within 24-48 hours of starting treatment.
Excretion
Primarily excreted through the kidneys via glomerular filtration. Some excretion also occurs in bile.
Half life
Approximately 6-10 hours, allowing for twice-daily dosing.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, approximately 60-80% absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-4 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver, primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to ramicyclin or any tetracyclines
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (due to potential for permanent tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition in fetus/infant)
- Children under 8 years of age (due to potential for permanent tooth discoloration)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring close INR monitoring.
Methoxyflurane
Concurrent use may result in fatal renal toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, requiring additional birth control methods.
Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or iron supplements
Can significantly decrease ramicyclin absorption. Administer ramicyclin 2 hours before or 4 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), liver damage, and kidney toxicity. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic, including gastric lavage and activated charcoal. Hemodialysis is generally not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to potential adverse effects on fetal/infant bone and tooth development. Consult a physician for alternatives if pregnancy is planned or suspected.
