Description
Overview of the medicine
Relaxo 25 mg Capsule contains Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride, which is primarily used to relieve anxiety and tension. It also has antihistaminic properties, making it useful for treating allergic conditions like itching. Its sedative effects can help with short-term insomnia.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For anxiety: 25-100 mg daily in divided doses. For pruritus: 25 mg, 3-4 times daily. For sedation: 50-100 mg single dose.
Elderly
Start with lower doses, e.g., 10-25 mg daily, due to increased sensitivity and reduced clearance.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is recommended; severe impairment may require up to 50% dose reduction.
Hepatic_impairment
Dosage reduction is recommended; severe impairment may require up to 50% dose reduction.
How to Take
Relaxo capsule is for oral use. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush it.
Mechanism of Action
Hydroxyzine acts as an H1 receptor antagonist in the central nervous system, leading to its antihistaminic, anxiolytic, and sedative effects. It may also exert some anticholinergic activity and minor depressant effects on the subcortical areas of the CNS.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 15-30 minutes for sedative effects.
Excretion
Mainly renal, with cetirizine as the primary excretory product.
Half life
Approximately 7-20 hours (variable depending on age and hepatic/renal function).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, peak plasma concentrations typically within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, oxidized to cetirizine (an active metabolite) by alcohol dehydrogenase and other enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Hydroxyzine, cetirizine, levocetirizine, or any excipients of the product.
- •Patients with known acquired or congenital QT prolongation.
- •Patients with significant risk factors for cardiac arrhythmia (e.g., severe cardiac disease, significant electrolyte disturbances).
- •Pregnancy and lactation.
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine
May increase hydroxyzine plasma levels due to inhibition of hepatic metabolism.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids)
Increased sedative effect and CNS depression. Avoid concomitant use or use with caution at reduced doses.
Anticholinergic Agents (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants, atropine)
Potentiation of anticholinergic side effects.
QT Prolonging Drugs (e.g., antiarrhythmics, some antipsychotics, some antibiotics)
Increased risk of cardiac arrhythmia. Concomitant use is contraindicated.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include excessive sedation, somnolence, stupor, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, blurred vision, tremors, hallucinations, and possibly coma. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage if ingested recently. Monitor cardiac function due to QT prolongation risk.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation. Hydroxyzine and its metabolite, cetirizine, cross the placental barrier and are excreted in human milk.
