Description
Overview of the medicine
Reocef 125 mg Suspension is an oral antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin group, used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 10 years or weighing more than 50 kg: 200-400 mg daily as a single dose or in two divided doses. For suspension, equivalent to 10 ml - 20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) once daily or 5-10 ml (1-2 teaspoonfuls) twice daily.
Elderly
No dose adjustment required unless renal function is severely impaired.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, 75% of standard dose. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Eliminated predominantly by renal excretion (approximately 50% unchanged in urine) and biliary excretion.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly alter the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of anaphylaxis to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time, monitor INR closely.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels reported with concomitant use.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (though clinical significance is debatable).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. After reconstitution, store at 2-8°C (do not freeze) and discard after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated; otherwise, no specific antidote. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove significant quantities of cefixime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
