Description
Overview of the medicine
Respira 2 mg Tablet contains Salbutamol, a selective beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist. It is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as wheezing and shortness of breath.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 2-4 mg three or four times daily. Doses should be spaced to allow at least 6 hours between doses.
Elderly
Elderly patients may start with a lower dose (e.g., 2 mg three or four times daily) and adjust according to response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment. Monitor for side effects.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle and bronchodilation. This helps to open the airways, making breathing easier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral onset: 30 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine, both as unchanged drug and as the sulfate conjugate.
Half life
4-6 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes metabolism in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Salbutamol or any component of the tablet.
- Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase serum digoxin levels.
Diuretics
Increased risk of hypokalemia with concomitant use of non-potassium-sparing diuretics.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
Can antagonize the effects of Salbutamol and may cause severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients.
MAOIs and Tricyclic Antidepressants
May potentiate the vascular effects of Salbutamol, increasing risk of cardiovascular side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, tremor, headache, and hypokalemia. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment, often including discontinuation of the drug and potassium supplementation if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Salbutamol is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
