Description
Overview of the medicine
Restovit-B 5 mg Capsule contains Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), which is essential for various bodily functions, including metabolism, nerve function, and red blood cell formation. It is used to prevent and treat Vitamin B6 deficiency and certain neurological conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dosage for deficiency: 2.5-10 mg daily. For specific conditions like isoniazid-induced neuropathy: 10-50 mg daily. This 5 mg capsule can be taken once daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with very high doses in long-term use.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for mild to moderate impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Can be taken once daily or as prescribed.
Mechanism of Action
Pyridoxine is converted to its active forms, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) and pyridoxamine phosphate (PMP), which act as coenzymes in numerous metabolic pathways, including amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism. It is crucial for neurotransmitter synthesis and red blood cell production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Benefits may be noticed over days to weeks, depending on the deficiency.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys, mostly as 4-pyridoxic acid.
Half life
Approximately 15-20 days (for PLP), 2-3 hours for free pyridoxine.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the jejunum. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) and other active forms. PLP is the main circulating form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Pyridoxine or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with Levodopa therapy (unless combined with a peripheral dopa decarboxylase inhibitor).
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine may reduce the efficacy of Levodopa unless it is administered with a peripheral dopa decarboxylase inhibitor.
Phenobarbital, Phenytoin
Pyridoxine may decrease the plasma concentrations of phenobarbital and phenytoin.
Isoniazid, Penicillamine, Oral Contraceptives
These drugs can increase pyridoxine requirements or interfere with its metabolism.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture, below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (usually with very high, long-term doses) include severe peripheral neuropathy, ataxia, and sensory changes. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; discontinue the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Considered safe when taken at recommended doses. High doses should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation unless medically necessary.

Lab Monitoring
- Serum pyridoxine levels (if deficiency is suspected or for monitoring high-dose therapy).
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on the importance of a balanced diet for B vitamin intake.
- Caution patients against self-medicating with very high doses for extended periods due to the risk of neuropathy.
- Consider B6 supplementation in patients on isoniazid therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take as directed by your doctor or as per package insert.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially Levodopa.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
