Description
Overview of the medicine
Restovit-B 5 mg Tablet is a vitamin supplement containing Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6). It is essential for various metabolic functions, nerve health, and red blood cell formation. It is used to prevent and treat Vitamin B6 deficiency and associated conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5-20 mg orally once daily for deficiency or specific indications. Higher doses may be used under medical supervision.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution with very high doses due to potential for neuropathy.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate impairment. For severe impairment, consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Pyridoxine, in its active form pyridoxal phosphate, acts as a coenzyme for over 100 enzymes involved in amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, glycogenolysis, and sphingolipid synthesis. It is crucial for brain development, immune function, and hemoglobin formation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects typically observed within days to weeks, depending on the severity of deficiency.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine as 4-pyridoxic acid, the major inactive metabolite. Unmetabolized pyridoxine is also excreted.
Half life
Approximately 15-20 days (for pyridoxal phosphate).
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the jejunum. Absorption is not affected by food.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to its active form, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP), and other metabolites. PLP is stored primarily in the liver, muscles, and brain.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Pyridoxine or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine can reduce the efficacy of levodopa (used without a decarboxylase inhibitor) in Parkinson's disease by increasing its peripheral metabolism.
Isoniazid, Penicillamine, Hydralazine, Cycloserine
These drugs are pyridoxine antagonists and can cause B6 deficiency; co-administration may require increased pyridoxine dosage.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
High doses (over 200 mg/day for prolonged periods) of pyridoxine can cause peripheral neuropathy, ataxia, and photosensitivity. Treatment is supportive, discontinuation of the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation at recommended doses for treating deficiency or specific conditions. Consult a doctor before taking higher doses.
