Description
Overview of the medicine
Rinofen 120 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance the body produces during an allergic reaction.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria: 120 mg once daily. For some patients, 60 mg twice daily might be prescribed.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is recommended for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For adults and children 12 years and older with impaired renal function, the recommended starting dose is 60 mg once daily.
How to Take
Rinofen tablets should be taken orally with water, with or without food. Avoid taking with fruit juices (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It inhibits histamine-induced wheal and flare reactions by preventing histamine from binding to H1 receptors, thereby alleviating allergic symptoms without causing significant drowsiness.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 11%).
Half life
Elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of the total dose is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any excipients in the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
Can increase fexofenadine plasma levels, but generally not considered clinically significant.
Antacids (aluminum and magnesium containing)
May reduce the bioavailability of fexofenadine. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
