Description
Overview of the medicine
Rizin 10 mg Tablet contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily. Some patients may respond to 5 mg once daily.
Elderly
5 mg once daily, or 10 mg once daily for patients with normal renal function. Lower dose recommended for renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose of 5 mg once daily for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance 11-31 mL/min).
How to Take
Rizin 10 mg tablet should be taken orally, with or without food. It can be taken at any time of day, but typically once daily.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective antagonist of peripheral H1 receptors. It inhibits the histamine-mediated effects such as vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and itching, without significantly crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Within 20-60 minutes
Excretion
Excreted mainly in urine as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 8-11 hours (adults)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentration reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivative
- •Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
A small, statistically significant decrease in cetirizine clearance has been reported with concomitant theophylline administration, though clinical significance is minimal.
Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants
Concurrent use with alcohol or other CNS depressants may lead to additive CNS depression (e.g., drowsiness).
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, headache, and urinary retention. Management is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
