Description
Overview of the medicine
Dicycloverine (also known as Dicyclomine) is an anticholinergic medication used to treat symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), such as cramps, spasms, and pain in the stomach and intestines. It helps to relax the muscles of the gut.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 10-20 mg three to four times daily. Maximum dose 80 mg/day.
Elderly
Start with lower dose (e.g., 10 mg three times daily) due to increased sensitivity to anticholinergic effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary; monitor for adverse effects.
How to Take
Take orally, usually 30-60 minutes before meals. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Dicycloverine works by blocking the action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors located in the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and other organs. This blockade leads to relaxation of smooth muscles, reducing spasms and cramping.
Pharmacokinetics

1-2 hours
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine (80%) and feces (10%)
Half life
Approximately 1.8 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration reached within 1-1.5 hours.

Primarily hepatic metabolism

Drug Interactions
Digoxin

Other Anticholinergics (e.g., tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines)
Increased risk of anticholinergic side effects (e.g., dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation).
