Rosuvastatin is a statin medication used to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke. It works by reducing cholesterol production in the liver.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 5-10 mg once daily, adjusted based on lipid levels, max 40 mg daily. For 20 mg, typically 1 tablet once daily.
Elderly
Initial dose 5 mg once daily, carefully titrate dose.
Renal_impairment
Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min): Initial 5 mg once daily, max 10 mg daily. Moderate impairment: No dose adjustment needed, but monitor carefully.
How to Take
Oral administration, can be taken any time of day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Rosuvastatin selectively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby reducing hepatic cholesterol production and increasing LDL receptor expression on hepatocyte surfaces.

Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Niacin

Cyclosporine
Significant increase in rosuvastatin exposure; contraindicated.
