Description
Overview of the medicine
Salix 2 mg Syrup is an antihistaminic medication used to relieve symptoms of allergic reactions such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itching. It helps to block the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: 10 ml (4 mg) once daily. In some cases, 5 ml (2 mg) once daily may be sufficient.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required unless renal impairment is present. Use with caution.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary. For mild to moderate impairment, 5 ml (2 mg) once daily. Not recommended for severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food, usually once daily. Use a measuring spoon or cup provided with the syrup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Salix acts as a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively binds to H1 receptors, thereby preventing the binding and action of histamine. This blocks the cascade of allergic reactions mediated by histamine, leading to relief of symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug. Small amount excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 10-15 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites. Minimal first-pass metabolism.
