Overview of the medicine
Samprid (Sucralfate) is a cytoprotective agent used for the short-term treatment of duodenal ulcers and for maintenance therapy. It forms a protective barrier over ulcer sites.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 g (tablet or 10 ml suspension) four times daily on an empty stomach (1 hour before meals and at bedtime)
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, no specific adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment
Renal_impairment
Caution advised due to potential aluminum accumulation, especially in severe impairment. Monitor phosphate levels.
How to Take
Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before meals and at bedtime. Tablets may be broken or dissolved in water. Suspension should be shaken well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralfate binds to proteins in the ulcer base, forming a viscous, gel-like protective barrier that shields the ulcer from acid, pepsin, and bile salts. It also stimulates prostaglandin synthesis and bicarbonate secretion, contributing to mucosal protection.

Drug Interactions
Antacids
May decrease the binding affinity of sucralfate. Take sucralfate at least 30 minutes before or after antacids.
H2 Receptor Antagonists / PPIs
May reduce efficacy by altering gastric pH, though not strongly contraindicated.
Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin), Phenytoin, Digoxin, Theophylline, Warfarin
Sucralfate can interfere with absorption. Administer these drugs at least 2 hours before or after sucralfate.
