Description
Overview of the medicine
Sedno (Serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme with anti-inflammatory, anti-edemic, and fibrinolytic properties. It is used to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain in various conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 10 mg or 20 mg, 2-3 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution advised. Same as adult dosage unless liver/kidney impairment.
Renal_impairment
Caution advised. Dosage reduction may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, preferably on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes before food, or 2 hours after food, to ensure optimal absorption and prevent degradation by stomach acid.
Mechanism of Action
Serratiopeptidase acts by hydrolyzing proteins, breaking down inflammatory mediators like bradykinin, histamine, and serotonin. It also helps to liquefy exudates and reduce swelling by promoting the drainage of fluid from inflamed tissues. Its fibrinolytic activity assists in dissolving blood clots and tissue debris.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects typically seen within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted mainly through urine and feces.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, resisting degradation in the digestive tract due to enteric coating.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver.
