Description
Overview of the medicine
Serolux 100 mg Tablet is an antidepressant belonging to the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) class. It is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. It helps to restore the balance of a certain natural substance (serotonin) in the brain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 50 mg once daily, may be increased to 100 mg once daily after several weeks. Maximum dose 200 mg/day.
Elderly
Initial dose 25 mg once daily, may be gradually increased. Lower doses may be considered due to potential for increased sensitivity.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment generally required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, once daily, with or without food. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Serolux selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) into the presynaptic neuron, thereby potentiating serotonergic activity in the central nervous system. This leads to an increase in serotonin concentration in the synaptic cleft, improving mood and reducing anxiety.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Initial therapeutic effects may be observed within 2-4 weeks; full effects within 6-8 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in feces (approximately 60%) and urine (approximately 35%), mainly as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 24-26 hours, with active metabolites having a longer half-life.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentrations achieved within 4-8 hours. Food may slightly increase absorption.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes (primarily CYP2C19 and CYP2B6), with first-pass metabolism.
