Serolux 50 mg Tablet contains Sertraline, which is an antidepressant medication used to treat various mental health conditions. It belongs to a class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, a natural substance that helps maintain mental balance.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 50 mg once daily. May be increased up to 200 mg daily based on response and tolerability.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution advised. Initial dose 25-50 mg once daily, adjusted based on response.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment typically required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily, in the morning or evening, with or without food. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Sertraline selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) by the presynaptic neuron, thereby increasing the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. This leads to enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system.

Onset
Therapeutic effects usually seen within 2-4 weeks, though some improvement may be noted earlier.
Excretion
Approximately 40-45% excreted in urine and 40-45% in feces, largely as inactive metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 26 hours (range 22-36 hours) for sertraline, with an active metabolite desmethylsertraline having a half-life of 62-104 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentrations achieved 4.5-8.4 hours after administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via N-demethylation to desmethylsertraline, which is pharmacologically less active.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Concomitant use with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI.
- Concomitant use with pimozide.
- Known hypersensitivity to sertraline or any component of the formulation.

Risk of serious, sometimes fatal, reactions including serotonin syndrome.
Pimozide
Increased pimozide levels and potential for QT prolongation.
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time/INR, leading to increased bleeding risk.
NSAIDs/Aspirin

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, tremor, agitation, dizziness, and rarely, coma. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; maintain airway, monitor cardiac and vital signs. Activated charcoal may be considered.

Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts of sertraline are excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
