Overview of the medicine

Sertal contains Drotaverine, an antispasmodic agent used to relieve various types of smooth muscle spasms, particularly in conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and gynecological conditions.

Uses & Indications

Spasms of smooth muscles associated with diseases of the biliary tract (e.g., cholecystolithiasis, cholangiolithiasis, cholecystitis, pericystitis, cholangitis, papillitis).

Spasms of smooth muscles of the urinary tract (e.g., nephrolithiasis, ureterolithiasis, pyelitis, cystitis, bladder tenesmus).

As adjuvant therapy in gastrointestinal tract conditions associated with smooth muscle spasm (e.g., gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastritis, enteritis, colitis, spastic colitis with constipation and irritable bowel syndrome).

Headaches of tension type.

Gynecological diseases (e.g., dysmenorrhoea, threatened abortion, uterine contractions).

Dosage

Adults

Adults: 40-80 mg (1-2 tablets) 2-3 times daily.

Elderly

No special dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.

Renal_impairment

Caution advised, dose adjustment may be necessary.

Orally, with or without food.

Mechanism of Action

Drotaverine acts by inhibiting phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) and increasing intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) in smooth muscle cells, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscles. It directly relaxes smooth muscles.
