Description
Overview of the medicine
Slimi (Orlistat) is a lipase inhibitor medicine used for weight management in obese or overweight individuals. It works by preventing the absorption of about one-third of the fat from the food eaten.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
120 mg capsule orally three times a day with each main meal containing fat
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment
How to Take
Take orally with water during or up to 1 hour after each main meal. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose can be skipped.
Mechanism of Action
Orlistat inhibits gastrointestinal lipases (enzymes that break down fat). This prevents the hydrolysis of dietary triglycerides into absorbable free fatty acids and monoglycerides, thereby reducing the absorption of dietary fat.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 24-48 hours
Excretion
Primarily via feces (approximately 97% of the dose is excreted in the feces, with 83% as unchanged drug)
Half life
Approximately 1-2 hours (plasma elimination half-life is longer, ~14 hours, but systemic absorption is minimal)
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 1%)
Metabolism
Primarily in the gastrointestinal tract; minimal systemic metabolism
