Description
Overview of the medicine
Somazin 500 mg Injection contains Citicoline, a psychostimulant and nootropic. It helps in the recovery of brain function and repair of damaged brain cells following various neurological conditions such as stroke, head injury, and cognitive impairment.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Acute Ischemic Stroke: 500-1000 mg IV/IM once or twice daily for 6 weeks. Head Trauma: 500-1000 mg IV/IM twice daily for 2-4 weeks. Cognitive Impairment: 500 mg IV/IM once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised, and dose may be adjusted based on clinical response.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is typically required, as it is primarily metabolized in the liver.
How to Take
Administer intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV). For IV administration, it can be given as a slow intravenous injection (over 3-5 minutes) or as an intravenous drip (over 40-60 minutes).
Mechanism of Action
Citicoline enhances the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of neuronal membranes. It also increases levels of neurotransmitters like acetylcholine and dopamine in the brain, improving neuronal function, cerebral blood flow, and reducing oxidative stress.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours for some effects, but clinical improvement typically observed over days to weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily as carbon dioxide via respiration and as choline and cytidine via urine.
Half life
Biphasic half-life with an initial rapid phase (hours) and a slower elimination phase (days).
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral, intramuscular, and intravenous administration. Bioavailability is high.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to choline and cytidine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Citicoline or any excipients

Meclofenoxate (Centrophenoxine)
Avoid co-administration due to potential additive central stimulatory effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific antidote. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Caution advised during lactation as it is unknown if Citicoline is excreted in human milk.
