Description
Overview of the medicine
Sonexim 100 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used in adults in suspension form; usually 400 mg daily as tablet/capsule.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dose if creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use a calibrated measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which interferes with the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (approximately 50% of absorbed dose) and via biliary excretion (approximately 10% of absorbed dose).
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3 to 4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Absorption may be slightly delayed but not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins

Symptoms of overdose may include increased adverse effects like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis does not remove cefixime from the body.
