Description
Overview of the medicine
Spectazole N Cream is a combination medicine containing an antifungal (econazole nitrate) and a corticosteroid (triamcinolone acetonide). It is used to treat various fungal skin infections that are accompanied by inflammation and itching.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Continue for a few days after symptoms resolve, up to 14 days for most conditions.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment required for renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin and gently rub in. Wash hands thoroughly after application. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Econazole nitrate inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased permeability and cell death. Triamcinolone acetonide is a potent corticosteroid that provides anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive actions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief of itching and inflammation may begin within a few days of treatment.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine and feces as metabolites, if systemic absorption occurs.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not clinically significant for topical application due to minimal absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical application. A small amount of econazole and triamcinolone may be absorbed.
Metabolism
Metabolized to inactive metabolites in the liver if absorbed systemically, though systemic absorption is low.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to econazole, triamcinolone, or any component of the formulation
- •Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
- •Tuberculosis of the skin
- •Bacterial skin infections (untreated)
- •Acne rosacea
- •Perioral dermatitis
- •Vaccination reactions
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Though systemic absorption is minimal, high doses or prolonged use of topical corticosteroids may rarely increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental oral ingestion is unlikely to cause acute systemic toxicity. Excessive or prolonged topical application, especially on large areas or under occlusion, may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects like Cushing's syndrome or adrenal suppression. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor before use.
