Description
Overview of the medicine
Stebet-CL is a topical combination medication containing a potent corticosteroid (Betamethasone Dipropionate) and an antifungal agent (Clotrimazole). It is used to treat various inflammatory dermatoses where secondary fungal infection is present or suspected.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area twice daily, morning and evening, for up to two weeks. Do not use for more than 4 weeks.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, use with caution due to thinner skin.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas and gently rub in. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone acts by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, reducing the release of arachidonic acid, and thus suppressing inflammation. Clotrimazole inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased cell permeability and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hours to days for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Mainly renal and biliary for absorbed components.
Half life
Not well established for topical use; systemic half-life of Betamethasone is ~5 hours, Clotrimazole ~2 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption increases with inflammation or occlusion.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic for absorbed components.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Betamethasone, Clotrimazole, or any component of the formulation
- Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
- Tuberculosis of the skin
- Acne rosacea, perioral dermatitis
- Vaccination lesions
Drug Interactions
None significant for topical application under normal conditions.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical application. Prolonged excessive use may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., Cushing's syndrome) or local adverse effects (skin atrophy). Symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor. Prolonged use or application to large areas should be avoided.
