Description
Overview of the medicine
Steclo-005-cream is a potent topical corticosteroid containing Clobetasol Propionate 0.05% w/w. It is used for the short-term treatment of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of moderate to severe corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once or twice daily for a maximum of 2 consecutive weeks. Do not exceed 50 g per week.
Elderly
Use with caution due to thinner skin and increased risk of systemic absorption. Lower frequency or shorter duration may be considered.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised due to potential for systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply sparingly to the affected area and rub in gently. Wash hands after application. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Do not use on face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a physician. Do not use occlusive dressings unless advised.
Mechanism of Action
Clobetasol Propionate acts by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, called lipocortins. These proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects usually observed within a few days of initiation.
Excretion
Excreted via the kidneys and bile.
Half life
Systemically absorbed clobetasol propionate has a plasma half-life of approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids can occur, especially with prolonged use, application to large surface areas, or occlusive dressings. Absorption is increased in children and patients with impaired skin barrier function.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Clobetasol Propionate or other corticosteroids
- Untreated cutaneous infections
- Rosacea
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral dermatitis
- Pruritus without inflammation
- Children under 12 years (generally)
Drug Interactions
Immunosuppressants
May increase immunosuppression if significant systemic absorption occurs.
Other topical corticosteroids
Increased risk of systemic effects and local side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely. In case of chronic overdose or misuse, symptoms of hypercorticism (e.g., Cushing's syndrome) may appear. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; gradual withdrawal of the drug may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Lactation: It is unknown whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in breast milk. Use with caution in nursing mothers.
