Description
Overview of the medicine
Strazyl 200 mg Suspension is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For adults, typically 500 mg (12.5 mL of 200 mg/5 mL suspension) on day 1, followed by 250 mg (6.25 mL) once daily for 4 days, or 500 mg (12.5 mL) once daily for 3 days, depending on the infection. For children, dosage is usually 10 mg/kg once daily for 3 days or 10 mg/kg on day 1 followed by 5 mg/kg for 4 days, as directed by a pediatrician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, but monitoring of renal and hepatic function is advisable.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution is advised in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min).
How to Take
Strazyl Suspension should be taken orally, with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring device.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby interfering with the translation of mRNA.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is typically within 2-3 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in the bile; a smaller portion is excreted renally.
Half life
Approximately 68 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, however, absorption is decreased by food.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver, primarily via N-demethylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic, or to any component of the formulation.
- Patients with a history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use.
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased serum digoxin levels have been reported with concomitant macrolide antibiotics.
Antacids
Concurrent administration with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may reduce the peak serum concentrations of azithromycin. Administer azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
Warfarin
Monitor INR closely in patients receiving concomitant azithromycin and warfarin due to increased anticoagulant effect.
Nelfinavir
May increase azithromycin serum concentrations.
Cyclosporine
Monitor cyclosporine levels and adjust dosage if co-administered with azithromycin.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves supportive and symptomatic treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Azithromycin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is excreted in human breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
