Description
Overview of the medicine
Sugel 250 mg Chewable Tablet contains Sucralfate, a medication used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. It works by forming a protective barrier over the ulcer, shielding it from acid and enzymes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For duodenal ulcer: 1 gram (four 250 mg tablets) four times a day on an empty stomach, 1 hour before meals and at bedtime. Or 2 grams (eight 250 mg tablets) twice a day.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Monitor phosphate levels and adjust dose as necessary due to aluminum content.
How to Take
Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing. Take on an empty stomach, usually 1 hour before meals and at bedtime. Do not take antacids within 30 minutes before or after Sucralfate.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralfate forms a viscous, gel-like paste that selectively binds to ulcerated tissue, forming a protective barrier that shields the ulcer from acid, pepsin, and bile salts, promoting healing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the feces as unabsorbed drug. Absorbed fraction excreted in urine.
Half life
Systemic half-life is negligible due to minimal absorption. Local action persists for several hours.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically (less than 5% of the administered dose).
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Sucralfate or any components of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Should not be taken within 30 minutes before or after Sucralfate, as they can interfere with Sucralfate's binding.
H2 Receptor Antagonists / PPIs
May alter gastric pH, potentially reducing Sucralfate's effectiveness. Separate administration by at least 30 minutes.
Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Sucralfate can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Administer fluoroquinolones at least 2 hours before Sucralfate.
Digoxin, Phenytoin, Warfarin, Ketoconazole, Theophylline
Absorption may be reduced. Administer these drugs at least 2 hours before Sucralfate.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to minimal systemic absorption. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B in pregnancy. Use only if clearly needed. Excretion into breast milk is unknown, but systemic absorption is minimal.
