Description
Overview of the medicine
Supraxim 100 mg Suspension is an oral antibiotic belonging to the cephalosporin group. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, ear, nose, and throat.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Primarily for pediatric use. For children, the recommended dose is 8 mg/kg/day, given as a single daily dose or in two divided doses every 12 hours. For example, a child weighing 12.5 kg would take 5 ml (100 mg) once daily or 2.5 ml (50 mg) twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment necessary for elderly patients with normal renal function. Close monitoring is advised for renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min, dose should be reduced by 25%. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min, dose should be reduced by 50%. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis patients: use same dose as those with creatinine clearance <20 mL/min.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring spoon or cup. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course of medication as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours
Excretion
Mainly via urine (about 50-60% of absorbed dose) and bile.
Half life
3-4 hours
Absorption
Approximately 30-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of serious allergic reactions to penicillins (due to potential cross-reactivity)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma levels.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives (rarely reported).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep the reconstituted suspension refrigerated (2°C-8°C) and discard any unused portion after 7 or 14 days (check specific brand instructions). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated; otherwise, no specific antidote exists. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
