Description
Overview of the medicine
Tazox 500 mg Tablet contains Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract, and ear infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg to 500 mg orally twice daily, depending on the infection. For most infections, 250 mg twice daily. For more severe infections like pneumonia, 500 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-29 mL/min, 250 mg once daily. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 250 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
To be taken orally, preferably with food for better absorption. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime Axetil is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This disrupts the integrity of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1 hour (peak plasma levels)
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.6 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolyzed to Cefuroxime. Oral bioavailability is approximately 37-52%. Enhanced with food.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the liver; hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa and blood to Cefuroxime.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefuroxime Axetil or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases Cefuroxime plasma concentrations and prolongs half-life.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy; advise backup contraception.
Antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs
May decrease bioavailability of Cefuroxime Axetil.
Aminoglycosides/Loop diuretics
Potential for increased nephrotoxicity (though less common with Cefuroxime).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, encephalopathy, and other neurological sequelae. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis can remove Cefuroxime from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe, but use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential adverse effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
