Description
Overview of the medicine
Terbinafine 1% cream is an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and pityriasis versicolor.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and surrounding area once or twice daily for 1-2 weeks, depending on the infection type.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment needed for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream. Apply a thin layer to cover the affected skin and the immediate surrounding area. Gently rub it in. Wash hands immediately after use.
Mechanism of Action
Terbinafine inhibits squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in fungal ergosterol biosynthesis. This leads to a deficiency of ergosterol and an accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell, resulting in fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic improvement typically begins within a few days; mycological cure may take 1-2 weeks.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed drug and its metabolites are primarily excreted in the urine.
Half life
Not directly relevant for topical application; systemic half-life of oral terbinafine is prolonged due to tissue distribution (200-400 hours).
Absorption
Less than 5% of a topically applied dose is absorbed systemically.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism following topical application.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to terbinafine or any component of the cream.
Drug Interactions
Systemic Drugs
Due to minimal systemic absorption, clinically significant drug interactions are rare with topical terbinafine.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from topical application is highly unlikely. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a healthcare professional.
