Description
Overview of the medicine
Terbitac-1-cream contains Terbinafine, an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm. It works by killing the fungi that cause these infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area and surrounding skin once or twice daily. Treatment duration is typically 1 week for tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and 2 weeks for pityriasis versicolor.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients. Use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying. Apply a thin layer of cream and gently rub it into the affected skin and the immediately surrounding area. Wash hands after use.
Mechanism of Action
Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal that inhibits squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in the fungal ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. This leads to a deficiency of ergosterol within the fungal cell membrane and an intracellular accumulation of squalene, resulting in fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement is often seen within a few days, but the full course of treatment should be completed. Mycological cure may take longer.
Excretion
Minimal systemic excretion due to low absorption. Metabolites are primarily excreted in urine after oral administration.
Half life
Due to minimal systemic absorption, the systemic half-life is not clinically relevant for topical use. For oral terbinafine, the elimination half-life is about 17-20 hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of terbinafine from topical application is minimal (less than 5%).
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism at the site of topical application. Systemically absorbed drug is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to terbinafine or any of the excipients in the cream.
Drug Interactions
Other topical preparations
Avoid concurrent use of other topical medications on the same affected area without consulting a doctor, as it may alter absorption or efficacy.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to low absorption. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice immediately. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and dizziness.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Consult a doctor before use.
