Description
Overview of the medicine
Ticason 0.05% Ointment contains a potent topical corticosteroid used to treat inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. Its active ingredient is Fluticasone Propionate, which works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in the skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin areas once or twice daily, as directed by a physician. Continue for up to 4 weeks.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required. Use with caution, as elderly patients may have thinner skin.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For topical dermatological use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area and rub in gently. Wash hands after application unless hands are the treated area. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Fluticasone Propionate is a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. It acts by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, lipocortins, which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours of topical application for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in feces as metabolites. Very little excreted in urine.
Half life
Plasma half-life of systemically absorbed fluticasone is approximately 7.8 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may be increased by inflammation, skin folds, or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via CYP3A4 to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate or any component of the ointment.
- •Untreated cutaneous infections (viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic).
- •Acne vulgaris, rosacea, perioral dermatitis.
- •Pruritus without inflammation.
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 Inhibitors (e.g., Ritonavir, Ketoconazole)
Coadministration may increase systemic exposure to fluticasone, leading to potential systemic corticosteroid effects. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with topical application. Chronic overdose or misuse can lead to systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., adrenal suppression, Cushing's syndrome). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; gradual withdrawal if systemic effects occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Topical corticosteroids should be used with caution during lactation. Consult a doctor.
