Description
Overview of the medicine
Tobramycin 0.3% eye ointment is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1 cm strip) into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 2-3 times daily for 7-10 days. For severe infections, apply every 3-4 hours initially.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before and after use. Tilt head back, pull lower eyelid down to form a pouch, apply a small strip of ointment into the pouch. Close eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Tobramycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to bactericidal activity against susceptible microorganisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects typically observed within hours of application.
Excretion
If systemically absorbed, primarily excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Not well characterized for ophthalmic use; systemic half-life is approximately 2-3 hours.
Absorption
Systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration is minimal.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the eye.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to tobramycin or any other aminoglycoside antibiotics.
- •Known viral or fungal eye infections (as this is an antibacterial).
Drug Interactions
Systemic drugs
No significant systemic drug interactions are expected due to minimal systemic absorption.
Other ophthalmic preparations
If using other eye drops or ointments, administer them at least 5-10 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C/86°F). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion or excessive ophthalmic application is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to poor absorption. Local irritation may occur with excessive use.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor. Generally considered safe for ophthalmic use as systemic absorption is minimal.
