Description
Overview of the medicine
Tomycin 0.3% Eye Ointment contains Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye and its adnexa.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1 cm strip) into the conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily or as directed by the physician. For severe infections, apply every 3-4 hours.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before applying. Pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze a thin strip of ointment into the pocket. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Tobramycin exerts its bactericidal effect by irreversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action at the site of application.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed Tobramycin is primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys.
Half life
Not relevant for topical ophthalmic application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical ocular administration.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tobramycin or any other aminoglycoside antibiotics or to any of the excipients of the ointment.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If using other eye drops or ointments, allow at least 5-10 minutes between applications. Ointments should generally be applied last.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Symptoms might include punctate keratitis, erythema, increased lacrimation, and eyelid edema. Rinse the eye(s) with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
