Description
Overview of the medicine
Zinc is an essential trace element crucial for numerous bodily functions including immune response, wound healing, protein synthesis, and cell division. Topup 20 mg tablet is used to treat and prevent zinc deficiency and supports overall health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 mg elemental zinc daily, or as directed by a physician. For acute diarrhea, 20 mg elemental zinc once daily for 10-14 days.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, follow adult dosage or physician's advice.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water. Can be taken with or without food. Taking with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc acts as a cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis, and cellular growth. It is vital for immune cell function, proper wound healing, and maintaining skin integrity. It also plays a role in sensory functions like taste and smell.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, as zinc levels are restored in the body, typically over days to weeks depending on the deficiency severity.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via feces (approximately 90%), with a small amount excreted in urine and sweat.
Half life
Plasma half-life is around 1 hour after absorption, followed by slower distribution into tissues. Whole body half-life is longer, in the order of weeks to months.
Absorption
Approximately 20-40% of orally administered zinc is absorbed, primarily in the small intestine. Absorption can be influenced by dietary factors (e.g., phytates, fiber).
Metabolism
Primarily bound to plasma proteins (e.g., albumin, alpha-2 macroglobulin). Not extensively metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to zinc or any other components of the tablet.
Drug Interactions
Penicillamine
Zinc can reduce the absorption of penicillamine. Administer zinc at a different time.
Iron supplements
High doses of iron can inhibit zinc absorption. Take zinc and iron supplements several hours apart.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase urinary excretion of zinc.
Calcium supplements
High doses of calcium can interfere with zinc absorption.
Tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., Doxycycline)
Zinc can chelate with tetracyclines, reducing their absorption. Administer zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after tetracyclines.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Zinc can interfere with the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Separate administration by at least 2-4 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of acute overdose may include nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and lethargy. Chronic high-dose intake can lead to copper deficiency and impaired immune function. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zinc is generally considered safe at recommended doses during pregnancy and lactation, especially for treating diagnosed deficiency. Consult your doctor before use.
