Description
Overview of the medicine
Travofix eye drop contains Travoprost, a prostaglandin F2α analogue, used to lower elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Instill one drop in the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If using other ophthalmic medications, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Travoprost is a highly selective prostaglandin F2α receptor agonist which lowers intraocular pressure by increasing uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 2 hours for IOP reduction.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys after extensive metabolism.
Half life
The plasma half-life of the free acid is very short, approximately 45 minutes.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed through the cornea, where it is hydrolyzed to the active free acid. Peak plasma concentration of the free acid is very low (less than 20 pg/mL) and occurs within 30 minutes after topical ocular administration.
Metabolism
Undergoes rapid hydrolysis by esterases in the cornea to its active free acid form. Systemically, it is further metabolized by beta-oxidation of the alpha-chain and oxidation of the 15-hydroxyl group.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Travoprost or any component of the formulation.
- •Not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age due to lack of safety and efficacy data.
Drug Interactions
Other prostaglandin analogs
Concurrent use with other prostaglandin analogs is not recommended due to potential for additive effects on IOP and increased risk of ocular side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Discard any remaining solution 4 weeks after first opening.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause toxicity. Systemic overdose is also unlikely due to the low systemic absorption. If overdose occurs, treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Travoprost is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
