Overview of the medicine
Ceftibuten is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, primarily in pediatric patients. It is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults as a 100 mg suspension. If prescribed, 400 mg once daily (e.g., 20 mL of 100 mg/5 mL suspension) as per physician's advice.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment based on age, but monitor renal function. Max 400 mg/day.
Renal_impairment
CrCl 30-49 mL/min: 4.5 mg/kg once daily or 200 mg/day. CrCl < 29 mL/min: 2.25 mg/kg once daily or 100 mg/day.
How to Take
For oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use a calibrated measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.

Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce absorption of ceftibuten; administer at least 2 hours apart.
Probenecid
May increase ceftibuten plasma concentrations; co-administration is generally not recommended.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise patients to use alternative contraceptive methods.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store the suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze. Discard any unused portion after 14 days.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Hemodialysis may be useful in removing ceftibuten from the circulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but human data are limited. Use only if clearly needed. Ceftibuten is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; use with caution during lactation and consult a doctor.
