Description
Overview of the medicine
Truso DS (Azithromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it may be taken with food.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thus preventing the growth of bacteria.

Onset
Onset of action within 2-3 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in bile, minor renal excretion.
Half life
Terminal elimination half-life is 2-4 days.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, bioavailability is approximately 37%.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism, demethylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibiotic
- History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect, monitor INR.
Nelfinavir
Increased azithromycin concentrations.
Cyclosporine, Digoxin, Ergot alkaloids
Potential for increased levels of these drugs; monitor closely.
Antacids (aluminum and magnesium containing)
May reduce peak serum levels of azithromycin; administer azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
