Description
Overview of the medicine
Ulsec contains Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, used to reduce stomach acid production and treat conditions like ulcers, GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For GERD: 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. For duodenal ulcer: 20 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks. For gastric ulcer: 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Initial 60 mg once daily, adjust as needed.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is generally required for renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably in the morning before a meal. Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that irreversibly blocks the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as metabolites, a small amount in feces.
Half life
Approximately 0.5-1 hour, but duration of acid suppression is much longer due to irreversible binding.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the small intestine. Bioavailability is approximately 30-40% after a single dose and increases with repeated administration.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 system (primarily CYP2C19 and CYP3A4).
