Description
Overview of the medicine
Ultrasef 500 mg Capsule contains Cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 1 g twice daily, or 1 g once daily for uncomplicated UTIs, depending on infection severity and type.
Elderly
Dosage may need adjustment based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is necessary. For creatinine clearance 25-50 mL/min, 500 mg every 12 hours; for 10-25 mL/min, 500 mg every 24 hours; for <10 mL/min, 500 mg every 36 hours.
How to Take
Ultrasef 500 mg Capsule can be taken with or without food. To minimize potential gastrointestinal upset, it is recommended to take it with food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefadroxil is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Food does not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefadroxil or other cephalosporins
- Severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefadroxil plasma concentrations and prolong its half-life by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect by altering gut flora; INR monitoring is advised.
Live bacterial vaccines (e.g., Typhoid vaccine)
Cefadroxil may reduce the therapeutic effect of live bacterial vaccines.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea. Management includes symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis may be useful in severe cases.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation. Consult a doctor.

Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (e.g., creatinine, BUN) for prolonged therapy or in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
- Complete blood count (CBC) if long-term treatment is planned.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to report persistent diarrhea, especially if bloody, as it may indicate C. difficile infection.
- Monitor renal function in patients with pre-existing kidney disease or elderly patients.
- Ensure patient completes the full course to prevent resistance.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not share your medicine with others.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor.
