Description
Overview of the medicine
Flavoxate is a direct acting smooth muscle relaxant. It is indicated for the symptomatic relief of dysuria, urgency, nocturia, suprapubic pain, frequency and incontinence as may occur in cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, urethrocystitis/trigonitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg three or four times a day.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Flavoxate has a direct spasmolytic action on smooth muscles of the urinary tract. It inhibits phosphodiesterase and acts as a calcium channel blocker, leading to smooth muscle relaxation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief usually occurs within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 3.5 hours for the active metabolite.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma levels usually occur within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized, primarily in the liver, to its active metabolite, methyl flavone carboxylic acid (MFCA).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to flavoxate or any component of the formulation.
- •Pyloric or duodenal obstruction.
- •Obstructive intestinal lesions, achalasia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
- •Glaucoma.
Drug Interactions
CNS depressants
May enhance CNS depressant effects.
Anticholinergic drugs
May potentiate anticholinergic side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include severe anticholinergic effects. Management is supportive and symptomatic, including gastric lavage and activated charcoal if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed. Animal studies have shown no evidence of harm. Lactation: Unknown if excreted in human milk. Use with caution.
