Description
Overview of the medicine
Flavoxate is a smooth muscle relaxant used to relieve symptoms of bladder irritation and urinary tract spasms such as painful urination, urgency, and frequent urination.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
100 mg to 200 mg orally, three or four times a day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required unless severe renal or hepatic impairment is present. Use adult dose with caution.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be needed in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with water. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Flavoxate has a direct relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the urinary tract and also possesses anticholinergic properties, reducing muscle spasms and associated symptoms.

Onset
Onset of action within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites.

Plasma half-life is approximately 1.5 to 3.5 hours.

Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.

Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily to methylflavone carboxylic acid (MFCA).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Obstructive conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., pyloric or duodenal obstruction, achalasia, ileus).
- •Gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
- •Obstructive uropathies of the lower urinary tract.
- •Hypersensitivity to flavoxate hydrochloride or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Anticholinergic drugs
May potentiate the anticholinergic effects of other drugs, leading to increased side effects like dry mouth, blurred vision, or constipation.
Other antimuscarinics
Caution advised when co-administered due to additive effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, and headache. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excretion in breast milk is unknown; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
