Description
Overview of the medicine
Urodin-500 mg capsule contains Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride, a urinary analgesic that provides symptomatic relief from pain, burning, urgency, and frequency associated with urinary tract infections or other irritations of the lower urinary tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For 500 mg capsule: 1 capsule once or twice daily after meals, as directed by physician. Treatment should not exceed 2 days when used concomitantly with an antibacterial agent.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment for elderly patients, but use with caution due to potential for renal impairment and reduced GFR. Consider lower initial doses.
Renal_impairment
Contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance < 50 ml/min). For moderate impairment, dose reduction or avoidance may be necessary.
How to Take
Take orally after meals with a full glass of water. Do not chew or crush the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Phenazopyridine is an azo dye which exerts a local anesthetic or analgesic action on the mucosa of the urinary tract. Its exact mechanism is unknown, but it is believed to act directly on the urinary tract lining to relieve pain and discomfort.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily renal, with approximately 65% excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 7.3 hours
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Hepatic (partially), with reduction of the azo bond.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Phenazopyridine or any component of the formulation.
- Severe renal insufficiency (creatinine clearance < 50 ml/min).
- Glomerulonephritis.
- Hepatitis or severe liver disease.
- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to risk of hemolytic anemia.
Drug Interactions
None significant known.
Phenazopyridine is primarily used for short-term symptomatic relief; major drug-drug interactions are generally not well-documented for its short-term use. However, it may interfere with laboratory tests.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include methemoglobinemia, hemolytic anemia, hepatic and renal toxicity, skin discoloration. Treatment is supportive, including methylene blue for methemoglobinemia, ascorbic acid for less severe cases, and gastric lavage.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation, monitor infant for urine discoloration.

Clinical Trials
Phenazopyridine has been widely studied for its efficacy as a urinary analgesic. Recent trials focus on combination therapies with antibiotics and patient-reported outcomes for symptomatic relief in UTIs.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor renal function (creatinine, BUN) in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or during prolonged use.
- Urine analysis for signs of infection (note interference with dipstick tests).
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) if prolonged use or signs of hemolytic anemia.
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients about urine discoloration and its harmless nature, but also warn about staining clothes/contact lenses.
- Emphasize that this drug provides symptomatic relief only and is not an antibiotic. Always co-prescribe with an appropriate antibiotic for bacterial UTIs and limit use to 2 days.
- Caution in patients with renal impairment, liver disease, or G6PD deficiency. Do not use in severe renal insufficiency.
Patient Guidelines
- This medicine will turn your urine a reddish-orange color, and may stain clothing or contact lenses. This is normal and harmless.
- Do not use this medication for more than 2 days without consulting a doctor if you are also taking an antibiotic for a UTI, unless directed by your doctor.
- Wear sanitary pads to protect clothing from urine stains.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment as they may become permanently stained.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Driving Precautions
May cause dizziness or headache; use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
Lifestyle Advice
- Drink plenty of fluids to help flush the urinary tract.
- Avoid alcohol as it can exacerbate urinary symptoms or interact with other UTI medications. Maintain good hygiene to prevent recurrence.
