Description
Overview of the medicine
Valarux 1 gm Tablet contains Cefavarin Monohydrate, a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 gm every 12 hours, or as directed by the physician. Dosage may vary based on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless there is significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment may be necessary for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min). Consult a physician for specific dosing.
How to Take
Valarux tablets can be taken orally, with or without food. It is recommended to take the tablet with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Cefavarin Monohydrate is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This leads to the disruption of the cell wall and eventually bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.5-2 hours
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefavarin or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May decrease renal tubular secretion of Cefavarin, resulting in increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric distress, and diarrhea. In severe cases, neurotoxicity (e.g., seizures) may occur. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases of renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. However, use in pregnant women should be only if clearly needed. Cefavarin is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
