Description
Overview of the medicine
Vermid is an anthelmintic drug containing Mebendazole, used to treat various types of parasitic worm infestations.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For pinworm: 100 mg single dose, repeated after 2-3 weeks if necessary. For other worm infections: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but monitor renal/hepatic function if impaired.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Tablets can be chewed, swallowed whole, or crushed and mixed with food. Oral suspension should be shaken well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Mebendazole selectively inhibits the synthesis of microtubules in parasitic worms, leading to the depletion of glycogen and ultimately the death of the worm.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effect starts within a few hours to days, depending on worm expulsion.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces as unchanged drug or metabolites. A small amount is excreted in urine.
Half life
2.5 to 5.5 hours
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (about 5-10%). Absorption is increased with fatty meals.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Metronidazole
Concurrent use may lead to Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Phenytoin, Carbamazepine
May decrease Mebendazole plasma concentrations.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Use in other trimesters only if clearly needed. Excreted in low amounts in breast milk, caution advised.
