Description
Overview of the medicine
Vilet-B 5 mg Syrup contains Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), essential for various metabolic functions and nervous system health. It is used to prevent and treat Vitamin B6 deficiency.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 10-20 mg daily, divided doses; up to 100 mg daily for severe deficiency or neuropathy. For prophylaxis of isoniazid-induced neuropathy: 10 mg daily (10 mL Vilet-B syrup). For treatment: 50-100 mg daily (50-100 mL Vilet-B syrup).
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, follow adult guidelines.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for mild to moderate impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Measure dose accurately using a measuring spoon or cup provided with the syrup.
Mechanism of Action
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) functions as a coenzyme in numerous metabolic pathways, including amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism. It is crucial for neurotransmitter synthesis and red blood cell formation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects seen within days to weeks, depending on the deficiency severity.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys as 4-pyridoxic acid.
Half life
Approximately 15-20 days (for pyridoxal phosphate).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the jejunum.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) and other active forms.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to pyridoxine or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa (without carbidopa) in Parkinson's disease.
Amiodarone
Long-term amiodarone use can cause pyridoxine deficiency.
Phenobarbital/Phenytoin
Pyridoxine may decrease serum levels of phenobarbital and phenytoin.
Isoniazid, Penicillamine, Hydralazine, Cycloserine, Oral contraceptives
These drugs can increase pyridoxine requirements and lead to deficiency.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe sensory neuropathy (at very high doses, e.g., >200 mg/day for prolonged periods). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; discontinue the drug.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe at recommended doses during pregnancy and lactation. High doses should be avoided.

Lab Monitoring
- Plasma pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) levels (if deficiency is suspected or for monitoring response to therapy)
- Neurological assessment for signs of neuropathy
Doctor Notes
- Monitor patients for signs of neuropathy, especially with high-dose or prolonged therapy.
- Consider pyridoxine supplementation in patients on isoniazid or other drugs that deplete B6.
- Educate patients on proper dose measurement and storage.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Generally no precautions needed. High doses causing somnolence are rare but if experienced, avoid driving or operating machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in B vitamins.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it can interfere with vitamin B6 metabolism.
