Description
Overview of the medicine
Vinzam 500 mg Tablet contains Levofloxacin, a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent of the fluoroquinolone class. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the infection type and severity.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required unless renal function is impaired.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance < 50 mL/min. Refer to product insert for detailed guidelines.
How to Take
Vinzam 500 mg tablets should be swallowed whole with sufficient liquid, with or without food. It is important to complete the full course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antibacterial effects typically begin within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, with approximately 87% of the administered dose recovered in urine within 48 hours.
Half life
Approximately 6 to 8 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver; less than 5% of the dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any excipients of the product.
- •Patients with a history of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone administration.
- •Patients with epilepsy or a history of seizure disorders.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Enhanced anticoagulant effects have been reported; monitor INR closely.
NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
May increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizures.
Antacids, iron supplements, sucralfate, zinc supplements
These agents can chelate levofloxacin, significantly reducing its absorption. Administer at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after Vinzam.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In the event of an acute overdose, symptomatic treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage and appropriate hydration are recommended. Levofloxacin is not effectively removed by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Vinzam (Levofloxacin) should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in breast milk and should not be used by breastfeeding mothers.
