Description
Overview of the medicine
Viscoryl 1 mg Syrup is a medication used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It primarily acts as a bronchodilator to relax muscles in the airways and improve breathing. It may also contain an expectorant to help clear mucus from the respiratory tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2-4 mg (10-20 ml) 3-4 times daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Initially 2 mg (10 ml) 3-4 times daily, adjusted according to response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Viscoryl 1 mg Syrup is for oral administration. Measure the dose accurately using a standard measuring spoon or cup provided with the medication. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol, a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist, binds to beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, activating adenyl cyclase and increasing cyclic-3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). This leads to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, bronchodilation, and inhibition of mast cell mediator release. Guaifenesin (if present) acts as an expectorant by increasing the volume and decreasing the viscosity of respiratory secretions, thereby facilitating their removal.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bronchodilation begins within 30 minutes for oral syrup.
Excretion
Primarily via urine (approx. 80-100% within 72 hours, about 60% as metabolite and 40% as unchanged drug).
Half life
Plasma half-life of Salbutamol is 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (oral). Bioavailability is approximately 50%.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate (salbutamol 4'-O-sulfate).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Salbutamol or any other component of the formulation.
- Tachyarrhythmia or other severe cardiac diseases.
- Risk of abortion (during early pregnancy).
Drug Interactions
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May potentiate hypokalemia, especially with high doses of Salbutamol.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
May antagonize the bronchodilatory effects of Salbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) & Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
Can potentiate the cardiovascular effects of Salbutamol, increasing risk of arrhythmias.
Storage
Store below 30°C (86°F) in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose typically include tachycardia, tremor, palpitations, headache, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia. In severe cases, cardiac arrest or paradoxical bronchospasm may occur. Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive care. Cardiovascular monitoring is crucial, and a cardioselective beta-blocker may be cautiously considered if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Salbutamol is known to be excreted in breast milk; therefore, use with caution during lactation, and a physician's advice is recommended.

Lab Monitoring
- Serum potassium levels (especially in severe asthma, during acute exacerbations, or with concomitant diuretic or corticosteroid use).
- Blood glucose levels (in diabetic patients due to potential for hyperglycemia).
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of patient education on proper syrup administration and accurate dosing.
- Advise patients to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms worsen or if they experience severe side effects.
- Monitor for cardiovascular adverse effects and hypokalemia, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions or on concomitant medications.
Patient Guidelines
- Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding dose and frequency.
- Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform drug distribution.
- Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing; household spoons may not be accurate.
