Description
Overview of the medicine
Wedica 100 mg tablet contains Wedicaprin, a selective COX-2 inhibitor, used for the relief of pain and inflammation in various conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
100 mg once or twice daily, or as directed by the physician. Maximum recommended daily dose is 200 mg.
Elderly
Initiate treatment at the lowest recommended dose and monitor for adverse effects. Dose adjustment may be necessary based on renal or hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Dose reduction may be required. Contraindicated in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Wedica tablets can be taken with or without food. To minimize gastrointestinal upset, it is generally recommended to take with food or milk.
Mechanism of Action
Wedicaprin selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme, which is responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain, inflammation, and fever. By inhibiting COX-2, it reduces the production of these inflammatory mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Analgesic effect usually starts within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine (approximately 50-70%) and feces (approximately 25-30%).
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, mainly CYP2C9.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Wedicaprin or any NSAIDs
- Active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer
- Severe hepatic or renal impairment
- Third trimester of pregnancy
- Severe heart failure
Drug Interactions
SSRIs
Increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Lithium
May increase lithium plasma levels, leading to toxicity.
ACE inhibitors and Diuretics
May reduce the antihypertensive effect and increase the risk of renal impairment.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered within the first hour of ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid during the third trimester of pregnancy due to potential fetal harm (e.g., premature closure of the ductus arteriosus). Use with caution and only if clearly needed during the first and second trimesters. It is not known whether Wedicaprin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
