Description
Overview of the medicine
Xendox 200 mg Tablet contains Doxycycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Standard dose is 200 mg on the first day (as a single dose or 100 mg every 12 hours), followed by 100 mg once daily. For severe infections, 200 mg once daily may be continued.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based on age, but caution advised due to potential comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for renal impairment, as doxycycline is primarily excreted in feces.
How to Take
Take with a full glass of water, preferably while sitting or standing, to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Can be taken with food to minimize gastric upset.
Mechanism of Action
Doxycycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex. This prevents bacterial growth and replication.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically within 24-48 hours, though plasma levels are achieved much faster.
Excretion
Mainly via feces (biliary route) and urine.
Half life
16-24 hours
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, even in the presence of food and milk, though absorption may be slightly reduced by dairy products and antacids.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy (especially last half) and lactation
- Children under 8 years of age (due to risk of permanent tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May potentiate the effects of anticoagulants; monitor INR.
Penicillins
May interfere with the bactericidal action of penicillins; avoid concurrent use.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise additional contraceptive methods.
Antacids, iron preparations, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, bismuth subsalicylate
Reduce absorption of doxycycline; administer at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Treatment is supportive; gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion. Hemodialysis is not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated during pregnancy (especially second and third trimesters due to fetal tooth discoloration and inhibition of bone growth) and lactation (excreted in breast milk and can cause tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition in nursing infants).
